Artist Biography
Glacier National Park Artist-in-Residence 2005 In July and August of 2005, I was honored and privileged to serve as artist-in-residence at Glacier Park in Montana. Someone on the selection committee felt that there should be a series of travel-poster-like prints done for Glacier as I had created of the North Cascades. Since I base my t on photo references, I completed 10 hikes in the first 14 days and took over 800 photos.
Digital Block Prints During 2005 I began creating art in a form that I call "digital block prints." Using Adobe Photoshop, on the computer I create images that look like wood block prints or silkscreen prints. Both Japanese wood block prints and travel posters of the 1920s and '30s influence the style of my prints. The artwork has large areas of flat colors, each color being created as a layer on the computer.
Mountains in Oil For over 40 years I have hiked, mostly in the North Cascades, and the scenery on those hikes has strongly influenced my art. A number of years ago, I began creating oil paintings of the areas in which I hiked. In 2005 I began creating digital block prints of the scenes in the North Cascades where I hike.
Watercolors After retiring, I revisited the watercolor medium, which I hadn't worked in ince my undergraduate days at the University of Washington. I took a refresher class and began painting scenes around my home - dogs, cats, chickens, llamas, horses, sheep. Later I was attracted by the San Juan Islands and painted a watercolor series of San Juan scenes.
Art Training Most recently I have studied with Victor Sandblom a recognized painter in Seattle who has studied in France, Italy, and Spain. Victor has taught at the Kirkland Arts Center and Bellevue Community College. Shows of his work have been held in Paris and in the Foster/White Gallery in Seattle and Kirkland.
In college I majored in art, obtaining an art education teaching certificate through the University of Washington. I taught secondary art in the Edmonds School District and elementary art in the Monroe School District.
I have also taught computer graphics at both Bellevue and Everett Community Colleges. Professionally I worked as a graphic designer on a multimedia project for Alchemedia, Inc. in La Conner, Washington.
